HOME > REWEAVING > REPAIRS TO WOVEN ITEMS

Many woven items can be made usable and visually appealing again without completely reweaving the whole item. On the other hand, especially with chair seats, repairs are often inadvisable. Either too many strands of cane have been broken to make a repair cost effective, or the existence of breaks indicates that the cane has reached the end of its life. We would like to illustrate for you some of the many times we have successfully repaired woven items.

Isn't this an unusual baby buggy? Quite a nice heirloom piece. The photo to the right shows the lighter colored replacement strands.

We guess it is pretty obvious which parts we repaired! The repaired sections can be colored to blend.

Rattan furniture is often bound with cane wraps. Age, weathering and other factors weaken these windings. Replacing these features is a common repair need. By the way, we can also refinish rattan furniture as we hope these photos ably demonstrate.

This is a child's rocker made out of seagrass. It needed a new life and was given it by extensive and careful reweaving. Now it is being enjoyed by the next generation.

Wicker spokes were missing under the arms, in the back and in the magazine pouch under the right arm--not to mention the entire front skirt. Another gift to a new generation.

You should be able to see the lighter colored sections of seagrass that were added to restore this chair to an aesthetically pleasing condition.

It should be pretty easy to spot the repairs on these two wicker beauties. As you can see from the photo on the right, we can repair whole sections (the left arm on the right chair, for example), or just parts of a section (the right arm of the left chair).

Pretty typical wear area on wicker chairs. Repaired!

RattanChairsWithRewrappedBackJointsDetailOfRewovenSectionOfArmChair--FlatOvalReedInHerringbonePattern

Please help us and imagine what the corners of the arm of this chair and ottoman would look like if a cat had decided this made a good scratching post. Not too different from the chair arm above! We should have taken "before" pictures, these are the "after." We replaced and re-colored much of what we display in these two photographs.

More proof that photography is not our strong suit. Nonetheless, we hope you can see the parts of these chairs we have repaired--wraps at the back joints of the seat on the two central chairs and an upright rod in the back of the chair half out of the picture on the right.

RewovenBasket

Our ability to repair woven furniture items is a transferrable skill. We can also repair baskets! It really isn't our focus, and the cost of repair can exceed the cost of replacement by hundreds of dollars, but if you have an irreplaceable item of great value that is coming apart at the seams, we can help. Again, we missed the before photo, but the finished product looks pretty good.
