This was definitely one of the most challenging projects we have ever taken on. This couple does a lot of etertaining and needed a large set of chairs for their dining area. They also had very specific design factors they wanted to incorporate. Simple lines with stunning elegance. They found six of these chairs and had six more made. We reglued the six old chairs and finished all twelve to this rich custom color with a water-like gloss finish. The wood is oak, which naturally has deep pores in the darker sections of the wood. These pores had to be filled, the finish needed to be built up to a thickness which could be sanded to a 2000 grit fineness and then hand polished to create this liquid-like, reflective surface. What cannot be discerned by a picture is that not only does the finish look incredible, it also feels incredible in its silky smoothness. Sensory overload all the way.

These photos are pre-digital but still display a beautiful furniture design most likely from the 1920s. The dining table had a contrasting color pattern on the top like it has in the center picture, although the original color tones overall were darker that what you see here.

The picture to the left illustrates some issues this customer wanted us to resolve for her. The top of the mahogany table had been refinished a few years before but was a very red tone and unlike the skirt and legs of the table. The chairs were walnut and washed out. She wanted all to blend, along with some service pieces in the same room.

We didn't get a picture of the chairs before they went to the upholsterers, but you can see how the table and services pieces turned out to the right.

Beautiful. Beautiful. Beautiful. What else can be said?

We didn't strip this furniture. We cleaned it and restored the color patterns and sprayed a fresh coat of protective finish over all surfaces. We have written a bit more about it on our Decorative Finishes page. Allied Custom Upholsterers did the chair seats.
